Historical Zanzibar Tours: Msuka Mjini Ruins

Located on the Kigomasha Peninsula, these ruins consist of a mosque dating back to the 15th century. A unique feature of our Zanzibar tours to this site is seeing the circular mihrab, which bears an inscription of the date 1414 AD.

MKAME NDUME / PUJINI RUINS

Situated 10km southeast of Chake Chake, Pemba, these ruins were the seat of Mohammed bin Abdulrahman. Known as “Mkame Ndume,” his citadel remains a massive stone structure. This is a highlight for anyone seeking deep historical Zanzibar tours.

RAS MKUMBUU RUINS

These ruins date from the 13th and 14th centuries. They house the remains of a large mosque that was once the largest of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa. Archeological finds suggest links to the ancient “Qanbalu” mentioned by Arab explorers.

MARUHUBI PALACE RUINS

Just 3.7km from Stone Town, this palace was built by Sultan Barghash between 1880-1882. Though destroyed by fire in 1899, the iconic stone columns still stand. As a leading best tour operator in Zanzibar, we highly recommend this site for photography lovers.

BEIT AL AJAIB (HOUSE OF WONDERS)

The House of Wonders is the tallest building in Stone Town. Built in 1883, it was the first building in Zanzibar to have electricity and the first in East Africa to have an elevator. It is a central part of all our Zanzibar tours in Stone Town.

OLD SLAVE MARKET & ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL

Built in 1873 on the site of the world’s last open slave market. Outside, a moving monument of chained slaves serves as a powerful reminder of the island’s history. Most Zanzibar tours start here to understand the island’s past.

OLD FORT (NGOME KONGWE)

The oldest building in Stone Town, built in 1699. It has served as a garrison, a prison, and now the headquarters of the Zanzibar International Film Festival. It is a must-see landmark on our Zanzibar tours.

KIZIMKAZI OLD MOSQUE

Located in Dimbani, this is believed to be the oldest Islamic building on the East African coast (1107 AD). This site shows the deep roots of Islam in East Africa, a key focus for historical Zanzibar tours.

THE OLD DISPENSARY

A masterpiece of Indo-Gothic architecture, built by Tharia Topan. It was beautifully restored in the 1990s and remains one of the most decorative buildings on the seafront.

FUKUCHANI AND MVULENI RUINS

Located in the north near Ras Nungwi, these 16th-century “Enclosure Houses” are the finest examples of domestic stone architecture from the Swahili golden age.

MANGAPWANI CORAL CAVE & SLAVE CHAMBERS

A natural coral cave used as a secret transit point for slaves after the official abolition of the trade. Our Zanzibar tours provide deep insights into these somber underground chambers.

PRISON ISLAND (CHANGUU ISLAND)

A short boat ride from Stone Town, this island is home to endangered Aldabra Giant Tortoises. It is one of the most popular destinations for families booking Zanzibar tours.

THE FREDDIE MERCURY MUSEUM

This museum commemorates the life of Farrokh Bulsara (Freddie Mercury), who was born in Zanzibar. It showcases his roots and journey to becoming a global rock legend.

THE SULTAN’S PALACE (BAIT AS-SAHEL)

Built in the late 19th century as the official residence of the Sultans. It now serves as a museum showcasing royal history and heritage.

KIDICHI PERSIAN BATHS

Built in 1850 by Sultan Seyyid Said for his Persian wife. The baths feature beautiful stucco work and are a romantic stop on our Zanzibar tours.

MTONI PALACE RUINS

The first home of Sultan Said bin Sultan, which once housed over 1,000 people. Today, its ruins offer a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere overlooking the sea.
