Snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll is one of the most breathtaking experiences in Zanzibar. However, to ensure you have a safe, legal, and eco-friendly trip, there are several things you MUST know before jumping into the turquoise waters.
The “Don’ts” of Snorkeling in Mnemba
- 🚫 DO NOT Touch or Step on Corals: Corals are fragile living organisms. Stepping on them can kill colonies that took decades to grow.
- 🚫 DO NOT Feed the Fish: Feeding disrupts the natural ecosystem and makes fish dependent on humans, often leading to health issues for the marine life.
- 🚫 DO NOT Touch Dolphins or Fish: While they look friendly, touching dolphins can remove their protective skin coating. Also, beware of dangerous creatures like Moray Eels (which can bite) or Sea Urchins (with poisonous spines).
- 🚫 DO NOT Take Anything from the Ocean: Shells and corals belong in the sea. Please leave them where they are.
Important Restrictions & Fees
🏝️ Mnemba is a Private Island: Please be aware that Mnemba Island itself is a private, leased property. Access to the beach or the interior of the island is strictly prohibited. Snorkeling takes place in the reefs surrounding the island (The Atoll). Attempting to land on the beach will result in heavy fines.
💵 Conservation Fees: Every visitor is required to pay a Menai Bay / Conservation fee of $10. This fee is mandatory for all guests and goes directly toward protecting our beautiful marine parks.
