Many travelers picture the endless savanna plains of the Serengeti or the pristine beaches of Zanzibar. However, hidden along the remote western shores of Lake Tanganyika lies a remarkable destination. This is Gombe National Park, also known as Gombe Stream National Park.
Spanning just 35 square kilometers, Gombe is officially Tanzania’s smallest national park. Nevertheless, it holds a monumental position in global wildlife conservation history. Offered as an exclusive primate expedition by Saving Tour, Gombe delivers a deeply intimate wilderness encounter. Consequently, this journey stands worlds apart from traditional vehicle-based game drives.

The Legacy of Dr. Jane Goodall & The Chimpanzees of Gombe
Gombe Stream National Park rose to international acclaim in July 1960. During this time, a visionary British researcher named Dr. Jane Goodall arrived to study wild chimpanzees. Her groundbreaking scientific discoveries forever altered our understanding of primates and human evolution.
Today, Gombe remains a world-class sanctuary for wild chimpanzees. Furthermore, visitors traveling with Saving Tour gain the rare privilege of observing these intelligent creatures in their natural habitat. Specifically, you can watch family groups groom, forage, play, and navigate the jungle canopy.

Top Activities to Experience in Gombe National Park
A safari to Gombe is far more than a standard wildlife sighting. In fact, it is an immersive outdoor adventure combining trekking, water activities, and rich history:
- Chimpanzee Trekking: First, navigate steep forest trails with expert park rangers. You will follow calls echoing through the valleys to locate habituated chimpanzee troops.
- Guided Hiking & Nature Walks: Additionally, embark on scenic wilderness walks to the picturesque Kakombe Waterfalls. You can also hike up to Jane’s Peak for panoramic views.
- Lake Tanganyika Aquatic Adventures: Moreover, take advantage of the park’s coastal border on the world’s second-deepest lake. You can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and serene boat cruises.
- Bird Watching Expeditions: Furthermore, Gombe is a paradise for bird enthusiasts. The park hosts over 200 bird species, including the African Fish Eagle and Palm-nut Vulture.
- Cultural & Historical Excursions: Finally, extend your journey with a trip to neighboring Ujiji town. This is the historic site where Henry Stanley famously met Dr. David Livingstone.

Wildlife Guide: What Animals Will You See in Gombe?
Gombe Stream National Park features steep valleys and lush tropical rainforest along Lake Tanganyika. Because of this terrain, its ecosystem is dominated by forest species rather than traditional open-plain game.
1. Frequently Spotted Animals (Common Sightings)
During a standard stay in Gombe, travelers regularly encounter several iconic animals:
- Chimpanzees: Naturally, these are the main highlight of the park.
- Olive Baboons: In addition, baboons are regularly seen roaming along the sandy beaches.
- Forest Primates: Likewise, you will spot Red Colobus Monkeys, Red-Tailed Monkeys, Blue Monkeys, and Vervet Monkeys.
- Bird & Marine Life: Moreover, African Fish Eagles, Kingfishers, and vibrant cichlid fish thrive in the park.

2. Rare or Hard-to-Spot Animals (Elusive Sightings)
Gombe is home to several secretive animals. However, seeing them requires patience and luck due to the thick foliage:
- Leopards: These are the primary apex predators in the park. Nevertheless, they are nocturnal and secretive.
- Forest Mammals: Similarly, Bushbuck antelopes and Bush Pigs forage quietly through the undergrowth.
- Nocturnal Creatures: Meanwhile, Bushbabies and Civets emerge mainly after dark.
- Reptiles & Aquatic Mammals: Occasionally, Nile Crocodiles and Hippos appear in secluded bays.
3. Animals You Will NOT See in Gombe
It is important to note that Gombe is not a savanna park. Therefore, you will not see Lions, Elephants, Buffaloes, Rhinos, or Giraffes here. The mountainous forest terrain simply cannot support large grazing herds.
Saving Tour Recommendation: For a complete Tanzanian holiday, pair your Gombe chimpanzee trekking adventure with a savanna safari in Mikumi, Nyerere, or Serengeti National Park!
How to Get to Gombe National Park
Reaching Gombe is an exciting journey in itself. However, because there are no roads leading into the park, access is strictly via boat across Lake Tanganyika.
Option 1: By Flight (Fastest & Highly Recommended)
The main transit gateway to Gombe is Kigoma Airport (TKQ). Fortunately, scheduled domestic flights connect key destinations to Kigoma:
- From Zanzibar (via Dar es Salaam): First, take a quick 20-minute flight from Zanzibar (ZNZ) to Dar es Salaam (DAR). Then, take a direct domestic flight to Kigoma Airport (TKQ). Alternatively, you can book a connecting flight via Arusha.
- From Dar es Salaam: Fly direct from Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) to Kigoma (TKQ). Consequently, the flight takes only about 2 to 2.5 hours.
- From Arusha / Kilimanjaro: Board a domestic flight from Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) to Kigoma (TKQ). Thus, this route is ideal after a northern safari.
Final Boat Transfer to Gombe: Upon landing at Kigoma Airport, a quick 20-minute road transfer takes you to Kibirizi Port. Afterwards, board a scenic 1.5 to 2-hour boat ride on Lake Tanganyika directly to Gombe Stream National Park.
Option 2: By Road (For Overland Explorers)
If you prefer a road trip across Tanzania, keep one important rule in mind. Specifically, all motor vehicles must be parked in Kigoma Town before taking the boat to Gombe.
- The Overland Driving Route: Driving to Kigoma from Dar es Salaam or Arusha covers a massive distance of 1,200 to 1,400+ kilometers.
- Travel Time: Therefore, expect a multi-day journey lasting 2 to 3 days. You will need overnight stops in central towns like Dodoma or Tabora.
- Road Conditions: Although main highways are paved, remote stretches can be rugged. As a result, a sturdy 4×4 vehicle and an experienced driver are essential.
Best Time to Visit Gombe National Park
- Dry Season (May to October): This is the absolute best time for chimpanzee trekking. Forest trails are dry and firm. Furthermore, chimpanzee troops remain lower on mountain slopes, making them easier to track.
- Wet Season (November to April): Conversely, this season is excellent for bird watching and green photography. However, trails can become slippery.
